News and thoughts on UI/UX, web design, and more.
Thank you. If you're reading this you're most likely a client or colleague and I want to thank you for making 2014 a great year. No matter how interesting work may be, it is the people involved who make or break a project and I am very fortunate to work with great people like you. Awww! But really. Thank you. Here are some Pixel Lava highlights from the past year and a video.
Training Videos and online teaching: This past year I began to offer online live training and it has been really fun. Additionally, with the purchase of some software and other foundational inputs I'm now finally creating my training videos. I even got my first few done (with more to come!).
New Office: Life as an independent developer working in a home office is a maddening combination of lonely and distracting. I am now working in a very wonderful co-work space in Hillcrest so I now have a quiet, upscale office to meet with clients and do workshops. I hope you can come see me there sometime soon. New Packages: I make websites, but small businesses need more than just a website, they need marketing. This year I created a whole new menu of packaged services for various types of marketing. I'll be rolling out more info about those in January. All are built around my core mission of empowering people to do things themselves to both save money and create better marketing. New Skills: I am fortunate to believe that web work is continually getting easier so learning how to take advantage of that is a cool part of my profession. This year I completed an online course in making apps using HTML 5 and CSS, I took a social media marketing class, learned a ton more about search engine marketing and I learned a lot about iphone/ipad video, video editing, and online teaching. All cool stuff to turn around and bring to you in 2015! On the home front it was also a year of a lot of work with a big home landscaping project (new main pipe and xeriscaping!) and an amazing east coast family get-together. In between I was able to spend a rejuvenating week in Santa Fe, New Mexico and host some out-of-town family over the holidays. Yay! 2014 has been a year of a lot of hard work but also lots of love and happiness. I am very blessed. My wish for you is that the holiday break brings you peaceful joy, rejuvenation, and exciting ideas for the coming year. I would love to hear what they are, so please take a moment to add them to the comments section below. Everyone who comments will receive a free treat, so if you read this far, go for it!

What a wonderful replacement for the "traditional" Christmas letter. I was delighted to find your gift on the doorstep of my apartment and plan to open it Christmas morning. Special greetings to Anne. With Aunt Jewel in LA now, perhaps sometime in the next year, I can make it to the train station and head out for a visit. If I manage it, believe me, you will see me for an overnight stay and, finally, a look at the homestead. It was so exciting to hear that you and Ethan and Shannon had the opportunity to be together. How great. Next time you are in touch with them, please give them my best wishes!

Congrats, Ame, on your good fortunes and I wish you many more. As for us, you know the situation, so we are hoping for a year of good health. We have been blessed financially so all we need is to get better physically.

Next year, I'll continue with my Wednesday no-car day, but expand it to also be a creative development day. No production work! Just brainstorming and new product ideas.
