News and thoughts on UI/UX, web design, and more.
In early 2004 I stumbled across End of ze World, a brilliant Flash animation by Jason Windsor (a.k.a Fluid) on albinoblacksheep.com. In those dawning days of the interwebs, our imaginations were ablaze with urban legends and just starting their wayward slide into the rapture of cellphones. The closest thing to a meme was the Dancing Baby and we still pawed through browser download files to save Superbowl videos locally to share with friends. I was already a huge fan of Ze Frank and the power of web animation and video was just coming into it's own with increasingly better video compression methods and faster internet speeds. With the advent of Flash we were reveling in the joys of browser-based games and user-generated cartoons.
At last, the magic of animation had escaped the confines of big studios and landed in the hands of the masses. The first time I saw End of ze World it struck me as one of the most gloriously simple and bitingly hilarious commentaries on politics I'd ever seen. In cleaning out some old hard drives I recently came across a carefully preserved specimen so, from the Pixel Lava Vaults I present to you, End of ze World in all it's original Flash glory with it's charming loading STFU and quaint replay button - enjoy! (If you're on mobile, I've provided a link to a video version below too.) Hokay, so...
A video version for those of you who may be Flash-impaired.
But I am le tired… Well. Then. Have a nap. THEN FIRE ZE MISSILES!
